How to Choose a Scarf Print and Colour You'll Actually Wear

Most unused scarves were bought for the wrong reason: they were beautiful on the shelf. The test that predicts whether you will wear one is simple — does it contain a colour you already own three of?

Rule one: shop your wardrobe, not your palette

Pick the print that includes a colour already dominant in your closet — your navy, your camel, your black. A scarf that shares one tone with your clothes gets worn; a scarf that introduces a colour you own nothing in gets admired and left in a drawer.

Rule two: match the print scale to the outfit

  • Micro-prints (tiny florals, small geometrics) read almost as a solid from a distance and are the safest with patterned clothing. Good for work.
  • Medium scale is the most wearable: visible as a pattern, not loud. Start here.

Rule three: one anchor, one accent
