Let us be straight about this: silk on its own will not keep you warm. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. What silk does in winter is make the layers you already wear work better — and it is the only accessory that looks right both outside in a coat and indoors at dinner.
Where silk genuinely helps
- Under wool. Wool itches because of friction against skin. A silk layer between you and the knit removes that entirely, and silk's smoothness means the wool rubs silk instead of you.
- At the throat. The neck loses heat fast. A silk square folded into a strip and worn close — even a light one — takes the edge off a coat with an open collar.
- Indoors. This is silk's real winter advantage. Wool scarf and coat come off; the silk stays on and still looks like part of the outfit.
Three winter placements
1. The wrap over the coat
A long wrap worn over a coat, ends hanging long, gives a vertical line that outerwear destroys on its own. Silk-wool blends hold their shape better than pure silk in wind and can be worn as a proper layer.
2. The triangle at the neck
A triangle scarf sits better under a coat collar than a folded square: the point fills the V, and there is less bulk at the back of the neck when you lean into a chair.
3. The 90 cm square, doubled
Fold a 90 cm square on the diagonal into a wide band and wear it as a hood-adjacent cowl. Two layers of silk at the neck is genuinely warm; it is the shoulders that need wool.
Colour against winter clothes
Winter wardrobes go dark, and dark-on-dark photographs flat. This is the season to use a print with a saturated accent — a scarf is the cheapest way to put colour near your face in February, and it is the detail people actually compliment.
Care in cold months
