Silk has an undeserved reputation as a winter fabric. It is a protein fibre that moves moisture away from the skin and does not cling in humidity the way synthetics do. What makes silk hot is not the fibre — it is the weight and the amount of it.
Why it works in heat
- It breathes. Mulberry silk is a natural fibre with good air permeability compared with polyester.
- It manages moisture. Silk absorbs and releases vapour rather than trapping it against skin.
- It does not stick. Silk's smooth surface means less contact friction when you are warm, which is the sensation people describe as "sticky".

The honest caveat
A heavy silk wrap folded three times over your shoulders will be warm — that is what it is for. In summer the rule is less fabric, lighter weight, and keep it off the skin. A scarf that touches your neck at one point is fine; one wrapped twice around is not.

Five ways to wear silk in summer

1. Hair off the neck
The most practical summer use there is. A Printed Botanical Floral Silk Puffy Scrunchie at the crown or nape — and unlike cotton ties, silk does not swell with humidity or frizz your hair on removal.

2. The folded headband

Fold a small square into a band and tie at the crown or nape. It holds hair back without the pressure point plastic bands leave after an hour in the sun.
3. Shoulders, loosely
One pass of a 90 cm square over the shoulders gives shade without warmth, and it is the easiest way to keep a sundress from reading too bare in daylight. It is a layer of fabric, not sun protection — wear SPF underneath.

4. The bag and the wrist
When it is too hot to wear anything, put the silk on your bag instead. A Printed floral devore silk twilly wrapped on a straw tote or twice around the wrist adds colour with zero thermal cost.

5. The braid weave

Weave a Printed floral jacquard silk ribbon through a loose braid. It reads beach-appropriate rather than formal, and ribbon is narrow enough not to add weight.
Packing for a trip
Silk is the best-value fabric for travel: a 45 cm square weighs almost nothing, replaces three accessories, and washes in a hotel sink. Roll rather than fold, and it comes out with fewer creases than linen.
