Tie one end at the base of the handle, spiral the silk up tightly, and knot at the top. That is the whole technique, and it is the single highest-impact thing you can do with a small piece of silk.
Why it works
A plain leather tote is a neutral object. A wrapped handle adds colour at the point where the eye already lands, and it signals that the bag was chosen rather than grabbed. It also protects the handle from the oils and wear that darken leather over time.
Step by step
- Fold or roll the twilly into a narrow strip.
- Knot one end around the base of the handle where it meets the bag body.
- Wrap in a spiral, keeping tension even and each pass slightly overlapping the last.
- Finish at the top of the handle with a small knot or bow; tuck the tail under a wrap.
Choosing the print
The bigger the contrast with the bag, the bigger the effect — a saturated print against beige or tan leather reads strongest. If your bag is already coloured, choose a print that picks up one of its tones rather than fighting it.
Sizes that work
A twilly is ideal: narrow enough to wrap cleanly, long enough for a full handle. A small square folded into a bias strip also works, but bulk builds up faster.
